Ongoing Projects
I am the principal investigator of the following ongoing projects:
- MAI-HOME: Funded by Interreg. Budget: €4.000.000. Duration: 3 years. Gamification and behavior change interventions for energy saving in smart-houses
- GO-KIT: Funded by Parkstad Limburg. Budget: €525.000. Duration: 2 years. Energy-efficient smart-house system empowered by IoT, digital twins, and AI.
- EduVerse (Comenius): Funded by NRO Comenius Teaching Fellows. Budget: €50.000. Duration: 18 months. EduVerse aims at developing an adaptive learning model with AI, AR, and interactive multimedia.
- ART: Augmented Reality Tutor: Supported by the Quality in Education Fund. ART is an AR Tutor that interacts verbally and utilizes fine-tuned Large Language Models in the back end. 2024 Education Product of the Year Award!
- Magic Mirror: Facial Palsy Diagnosis and Treatment: In collaboration with StrokeCoach, we aim at developing a blended-care diagnosis and treatment method for facial palsy. Received €50.000 funding from NWO Open Competition - XS.
I have a supporting or supervisory role in the following ongoing projects:
- [2025 - 2027] IT-ISQS: Innovative Training for International Software Quality Standards
IT-ISQS aims to enhance awareness and understanding of international software quality standards. The consortium is tasked to develop an interactive course using gamification, casestudies, simulations, and AI to train students on essential software quality skills. Funded by the EU Erasmus+ KA program, the budget is €250,000. - [2025 - 2028] EYE-Teach
We aim at combining AI and eye tracking to explore childrens' reading comprehension processes, and in turn help teachers teaching reading. EYE-Teach is a Horizon 2020 project with a budget of €3,000,000 and 36 months duration. [CORDIS page] - [2021 - 2025] Sense the Classroom
In online classrooms, teachers often lack insight into students' learning progress, missing opportunities to adapt their teaching effectively. Learning-centered affective states, which encompass psychological, physiological, and emotional aspects of the learning experience, are key to addressing this issue. To support teachers, in this PhD project, we propose a privacy-preserving system that detects these states and provides actionable insights to enhance the learning experience. This project is fully funded by the Learning and Innovation in Resilient Systems (LIRS) research program of the Open Universiteit. - [2022 - 2026] Drop-by-Drop
This project aims to explore how IoT and AI models can capture household behavior, define and detect energy-saving behaviors, and design effective interventions to encourage sustainable living. By leveraging data from IoT sensor systems and machine learning models, we will predict behavior patterns to enable energy-saving automation and support a gamified pedagogical model that fosters long-term behavior change. The model integrates behavioral insights, gamification principles, and interventions to target psychological determinants, promoting learning and sustained sustainable practices. This project is fully funded by the Learning and Innovation in Resilient Systems (LIRS) research program of the Open Universiteit. - [2023 - 2025] Anti-Greenwashing Detection
This research addresses the societal challenge of greenwashing, which undermines trust and genuine sustainability efforts, by exploring AI-based solutions for its detection. The goals of the project are analyzing existing definitions, datasets, AI techniques, evaluation methods, and gather recommendations for detecting greenwashing. Furthermore, we aim at developing datasets and software solutions based on large language models to detect greenwashing in corporate communication. This research is funded by APG. - [proposal under review] Supply-Chain CO2 Emission Simulation
